Pa Kua & Tai Chi Chuan: Internal Kung Fu
Along with our regular Tai Chi classes, the UMass Inner Arts Club is now offering training in the rare Chinese internal martial art of Pa Kua Chang (Baguazhang: "8 Trigrams Palm").
One of Tai Chi's internal "sisters," Pa Kua's hallmark practice consists of vigorously walking in a circle and changing directions while performing twisting, coiling sequences of movements. As a fighting system, Pa Kua teaches evasive footwork, powerful palm-striking while in motion, and defense against multiple opponents. Practice of the Pa Kua palm changes (choreographed sequences that train whole body power) increases stamina, improves body alignment, creates supple joints and strengthens the tendons and sinews. The continuous circle walking not only calms the mind, but also makes one more surefooted and grounded in the constant change inherent in fighting or simply living.
This is a vigorous class, held outdoors year-round. Serious students only, please.
