New WORLD Theater INTERSECTION Conference
INTERSECTION is New WORLD Theater's biennial conference and festival examining new work practices by artists of color and showcasing multidisciplinary theater on the cutting edge of new aesthetics. This year's focus is art & activism, examining aesthetics and the role of performance in cultural organizing.
The conference will include performances, panels, round table discussions, artist-led workshops, and case studies that center on regional, national and international models of organizing for social change.
There will be a special Pre-Conference on Friday: The Rise of an Arab-American Cultural Movement.
Public performances include:
Friday, April 4 at 8 p.m.: Project 2050’s The Love in Revolution – a main stage presentation of the Summer 2007 creation.
Saturday, April 5 at 2 p.m.: Community/One – a showcase featuring works by a diverse group of groundbreaking solo artists working in an array of aesthetics, ideas and themes
Saturday, April 5 at 8 p.m.: breaking letter (s) – a new multimedia production created by Palestinian-American poet and activist Suheir Hammad in collaboration with media artist Waleed Zaiter.
Keynotes include Ngugi wa Mirii-Kenyan-born theater activist; Jesusa Rodriguez, Mexican theater artist and activist; Rhodessa Jones, renown theater artist and Co-Director of San Francisco's Cultural Odyssey Performance Group.
Activities include an Open Studio with playwright Cherrie Moraga and cast of The Hungry Woman; Artist Workshops, Live Music, and NWT's legendary Open Mic, hosted by Regie Cabico. Panel topics include From Activist Art to Cultural Organizing, Hip-hop Histories & Resistance; and a youth organized session, Youth Aesthetics, Action & Leadership.
