Miss Havisham's Wedding Night

This spectacular one-woman, one-act opera imagines the world of Miss Aurelia Havisham, the woman jilted by her lover at the altar in the Charles Dickens' novel Great Expectations. With a stunning score by modern American composer Dominick Argento and an electrifying libretto by John Olon-Scrymgeour, the opera is equal parts manic and tender.

Seniors Sarah Rulfs, mezzo soprano, and Ania Binczewski, piano, will perform the piece. The project is musically advised by Janna Baty, a voice professor in the Music Department, and dramatically advised by Maryann Lombardi, MFA '07, a lecturer in the Theater Department and the Director of Creative Economy at UMass. The performance is presented in partial fulfillment of Sarah's Capstone Experience in the Commonwealth College.

A stunning collaboration of several departments on-campus, the opera is powerful and poignant and beautifully represents the interface between music and drama.
