15th Annual Massachusetts Multicultural Film Festival: Bamako

The Interdepartmental Program in Film Studies' 15th Annual Massachusetts Multicultural Film Festival: Africanicities: Conflict and Community continues with Bamako.

Bamako
The politically urgent Bamako presents a bracing indictment of global capitalism. In a courtyard in Mali, the people of Africa put the World Bank and the IMF on trial. As magistrates hear passionate testimony about the devastating impact of debt servicing and privatization, the rhythms, humor, and small tragedies of life in neighborhood remind us of the gulf between the abstract and the concrete.
(dir. Abderrahmane Sissako, Mali/USA/France, 2006, 115 min, in French and Bambara with English subtitles)

Co-sponsored by the Graduate School, UMass Amherst and the Five College African Studies Council, in conjunction with the conference "Bamako: Globalization on Trial in Africa" (February 29 through March 1).

Introduced by executive director, actor, humanitarian and co-founder of Louverture Films Danny Glover.
