Harlem Renaissance Presentation

Come and experience the music, art and theater of the time period that created a change in American culture.

Professor Steven Tracy from the Afro-American Studies Department will offer a spirited presentation using film footage of artists such as Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday, Eubie Blake, Duke Ellington, W.E.B. Du Bois, Langston Hughes, and others. This presentation also incorporates contemporary recordings by Luis Armstrong, Countee Cullen, James Weldon Johnson, Zora Neale Hurston and Sterling Brown. Live performances demonstrating musical and poetic ties will provide the audience with a visual and aural flavor of the period.

Recordings by artists who followed the lead of Harlem Renaissance figures will help demonstrate how their legacy has continued to be with us through the twentieth and into the twenty-first century.
