Exhibit Reception: "Recent Architecture"

This is the opening reception for "Recent Architecture," an exhibit of drawings, models and photographs of architectural projects and furniture designed by architect Sigrid Miller Pollin.

Architect Sigrid Miller Pollin AIA, principal of Miller Pollin AIA Architecture and professor in the Architecture + Design Program in the Department of Art, Architecture and Art History at the University of Massachusetts Amherst moves across media to develop her designs for a range of contemporary buildings. Conceptual sketches for site plans, floor plans and building sections evolve into watercolors, paper study models, computer renderings, and, finally, construction documents and built works. Built works become a basis for light studies and new representations in various media. The work investigates continuous cycles of representation in art and architecture. It is also informed by the specifics of each site, reflecting a constant relationship between the natural and built environments.

Several built projects in the Amherst area are represented in drawings, models and photographs. These include a University of Massachusetts office building and research center completed in 2003 and a residence in South Amherst completed in 2007. Both projects embody ideas about changing perceptions, as users engage in the buildings from different vantage points in and around the sites. Also, both projects address the nature of public and private spaces, as well as the spaces found between the public and private.

The exhibit includes an array of design process studies, including study models and exploratory drawings for projects not only on the east coast,m but on the west, where Miller Pollin practiced architecture prior to moving to western Massachusetts, and where she continues to work today. The west coast work includes a sensuous oceanside residence in Laguna Beach, California as well as a School for Performing Arts sited in Riverside, California.

Photographs of Miller Pollin's recent furniture and lighting fixtures attest to her interest in carefully crafted details and the nature of materials. The interaction of color and light also play a key role in her interior design work.
