University of Massachusetts Amherst

Exhibit: A World of Cities

The UMass Amherst Libraries hosts “A World of Cities,” an exhibition of prints, drawings and photographs from the permanent collection of the University Gallery.

“A World of Cities” corresponds to a spring 2008 seminar “The City” (Architecture and Design 211) taught by Amherst College history professor Frank Couvares and UMass Amherst Art professor Max Page. An opening reception will be held on February 12, 2008 at 4:30 p.m. The reception is open to the public and refreshments will be served.

“A World of Cities,” co-curated by Professor Page and Kerry O'Grady MFA ’10, examines artists’ approaches to the depiction of cities. Universal aspects of urban life are explored across time and place, while defining the sharp differences in how people live, work, and interact in cities around the world.

Included in the exhibition are prime examples from the university’s significant collection of contemporary works of art on paper, such as photographs by the preeminent American photographers Robert Adams, Lee Friedlander, Robert Frank, and Garry Winogrand.

The University Gallery is committed to making its collection an inspiration for teaching and research in all fields and a dynamic extension of the classroom -- promoting critical thinking and visual literacy. By collaborating with faculty and students across the disciplines, as well as with colleagues at the university's libraries, the University Gallery advances creative teaching and active learning, as well as engaging in active outreach beyond the Gallery. With this exhibition at the W.E.B Du Bois Library, the University Gallery invites a wider public to enjoy its offerings.
