Mestiza Power

Mestiza Power is a poetic and powerfully performed new work from Yucatán, Mexico. Written and directed by Concepción León Mora and performed by Sa'as Tun, Mestiza Power reveals the dignity and struggles of contemporary Mayan women. The artists recount childhood memories, educational experiences, culture, and current issues facing indigenous women through a series of monologues and interviews conducted with street vendors in Mérida, the capitol city of Yucatán, and other rural areas of the state. These stories ranging from domestic violence to street life to mystical practice, paint a portrait of the faces, thoughts, voices, dignity and culture of today's Mayan women.
