Student Wildlife Society Meeting - What Do Hippos Have to Say?
What does a talking hippo sound like? Come find out at the next meeting of the Student Chapter of the Wildlife Society. Dr. Bill Barklow of Framingham State will be presenting a talk on how hippos use sound to communicate in air and water. This lecture is open to everyone. Free pizza will be provided.
Dr. Barklow began working on hippos after a commercial safari to Tanzania in 1986. He has been interested in the mechanisms hippos use to communicate with sound underwater, and amphibiously in air and water, two very different acoustic environments. He also studies the related problem of how hippos hear in air and water. He has published a number of popular articles on their communication and behavior, and technical papers on their underwater sounds and how they communicate in both air and water at the same time. He has also made several Discovery Channel and National Geographic TV documentaries on hippo communication.
