Race and nation intersected the intellectual and political lives of W.E.B. Du Bois, African-American scholar, activist and magazine editor, and Cuban national hero Jose Marti. Although there is no evidence that the two were aware of each other's works and public commitments, comparing their views sheds light on the relationship between Cuban and African-American intellectuals and their constructions of race and national identity.
