The Power of Learning
A large, broadly representative committee, chaired by Andy Effrat, Dean of the School of Education, has been working since April to plan the academic events for the Homecoming celebration on October 29, 2004, from 9 to noon in the Campus Center. The Power of Learning will complement the traditional athletic focus of Homecoming by highlighting the artistic and academic talents on campus.
The Concourse level of the Campus Center will highlight the arts with readings from students and alumni of the MFA program in English, student dance and musical performances, an aria from an opera written by the chair of the Theater department and produced in cooperation with the Music department, computer animation demonstrations, theater costume parades, and painting and pottery demonstrations.
Downstairs in the basement will be a health fair offering free massages, hearing screenings and BMI tests. The research room will highlight the very latest innovations and scholarship while the use of technology in the classroom will be highlighted in another room. There will be student exhibits and posters, a room dedicated to community service learning, and yet another for the study and science of learning differences. There will be a panel focused on the values that alumni can trace back to their experiences while here at the university. Finally, we will have a room dedicated to our future students, displaying science projects, writing and artwork of middle and high school students from the local area and Springfield.
Come join the festivities!
