Mosquitoes, Behavior and Molecular Genetics: Malaria Transmission in Southern Zambia
Dr. Norris is leading Medical Entomologist studying the behavior and genetics of mosquitoes that transmit malaria in sub-Saharan Africa. Malaria remains one of the greatest scourges of humankind, killing over 2 million people every year; mostly children in sub-Saharan Africa. Dr. Norris' work sheds light on how mosquitoes remain persistent in this transmission and introduces new concepts for reducing its incidence. In this seminar he will discuss his NIH sponsored research program with the following specific aims: (1) to characterize the temporal and spatial structure of malaria vector populations in the catchment region of the Macha Mission Hospital (Zambia), and (2) to associate vector mosquitoes from specific breeding sites to the human habitations where malaria transmission occurs.
