Lecture: "Combating Racism and Racist Sexism in a 'Racial Democracy'"

Minister Ribeiro will be lecturing on black women, racism and affirmative action in Brazil, topics very close to her duties as Minister of SEPPIR, and areas to which she has dedicated her life’s work.

The Secretariat, created in 2003 as recognition of the Brazilian Black Movement’s historical struggles, has as its mission to undertake initiatives against racial inequalities in the country. It is empowered to promote equality and protect the rights of individuals and racial and ethnic groups impacted by discrimination and other forms of intolerance, with an emphasis on the black population. In addition, the Secretariat coordinates policies to promote racial equality of the different ministries and government agencies, and articulates and promotes the execution of diverse programs of cooperation with public and private national and international organisms. It promotes and oversees Brazil’s compliance with international agreements to respect equality and to combat racial and ethnic discrimination signed by the country. Finally, SEPPIR supports the Ministry of External Relations with regards to Brazil’s relations with African nations.
