The Political Dr. Seuss

Did you know that during World War II, Dr. Seuss drew editorial cartoons? Or that he made army propaganda films with Frank Capra? Or that Yertle the Turtle was modeled on the rise of Hitler?

The Public History Program at UMass Amherst is premiering the film “The Political Dr. Seuss” a documentary exploring the life and work of Theodore Geisel.

Ron Lamothe will be on hand to discuss his film, as well as Richard Minear, whose 1999 book Dr. Seuss Goes to War: The World War II Editorial Cartoons of Theadore Seuss Geisel introduced readers to the artist’s political agenda. The event is free and there will be a small reception after the film.
