Designing for the 98 percent without Architects

The evolving Master of Architecture Program at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the first to be offered at a public university in New England, allows for a unique opportunity to reconsider the goals of a design education. Through a curriculum that allows students to understand the built environment as an integral part of both visual culture and social responsibility, our program hopes to provide an education that encourages reflective and socially responsible design practices. This mission is based on the conviction that innovative and artistic practices are inseparable from social engagement and public service.

In this spirit, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Architecture + Design Program is sponsoring a lecture series entitled, Agency and Action: Architecture and Art in the Public Realm. Featured speakers include educators, practitioners and artists bent on challenging how and why designers should engage the public, feel inspired by civic responsibility, and be involved in their communities.

Architect Bryan Bell is Co-founder of Design Corps a non-profit group whose mission is to find ways to offer quality, affordable design service to long-neglected communities.
