Exhibition: Order and Intuition: Paintings, Prints, and Photographs by John Roy
Herter Gallery is pleased to present: "Order and Intuition: Paintings, Prints, and Photographs by John Roy", a retrospective exhibition devoted to the work of the late artist.
Roy, who was born in Springfield, Mass. in 1930, taught in the Art Department at UMass from 1964 until his retirement in 1994. Until his demise in 2001, he created a quite remarkable and highly original body of work that represents an important yet unrecognized contribution to the history of the late 20th Century American painting, particularly landscape painting.
While a student at Yale University, Roy was deeply influenced by the teachings of his professor, Josef Albers, especially with respect to color theory and perception. This became the lifelong subject of Roy's artistic practice which, together with an abiding interest in the possibilities inherent to new technologies, enables Roy to create a unique way of transcribing information derived from computer-generated images into paintings of extraordinary visual delicacy and tact.
Opening Reception: Thursday March 8th, 4-6pm.
Both exhibition and reception are free and open to the public.
