Massachusetts Multicultural Film Festival: Cecilia
The UMass Amherst Interdepartmental Program in Film Studies Presents the 14th Annual Massachusetts Multicultural Film Festival: Encuentros/Encounters: New Cinema of Latin America & Spain
(dir. Humberto Solás, Cuba/Spain, 1981, 127 min, in Spanish w/ English subtitles)
A grand melodrama portraying the romance between a beautiful but poor mulatto woman and Leonardo, the son of a rich family set in the time of Cuba’s struggle for independence. An intimate and stark portrayal of slavery in colonial Cuba, the film’s very loose adaptation of the well-known historic novel by Cirilo Villaverde caused a scandal, making Cecilia the most controversial release in Cuban film history. DEFA DVD Release Premiere.
Co-sponsored by DEFA Film Library. Introduced by Enrique Garcia, Comparative Literature, UMass Amherst.
