The UMass Amherst Interdepartmental Program in Film Studies Presents the 14th Annual Massachusetts Multicultural Film Festival: Encuentros/Encounters: New Cinema of Latin America & Spain

A program of short films about Latin American indigenous culture and resistance.

Tainá-Kan/The Big Star (dir. Adriana Figueiredo, Brazil, 2005, 16 min, in Portuguese w/English subtitles) The origin of the Pleiades is told in this digital animation of a Karaja Indian legend.

La Cumbia del Mole (dir. Lila Downs (Mixtec) & Johnny Moreno, Mexico, 2006, 4 min) Oaxacansinger Lila Downs celebrates the traditional cooking of Oaxacan women and the art of making mole and music.

Land Rain and Fire (dir. Tami Gold & Gerardo Renique, USA, 2006, 30 min) An eyewitness account of the evolution of the popular uprising in Oaxaca, Mexico from its beginnings as a teacher strike to the formation of the current nonviolent civil disobedience campaign that has brought the state government to a standstill.

Indigenous Memories (Mónica Espinosa Arango, Puerto Rico/Colombia, 2006, 14 min) Inspired by Susan Sontag’s Regarding the Pain of Others, memory and photography are explored in the legendary Colombian peasant uprising of Quentin Lamé.

Co-sponsored by Commonwealth College. Directors Adriana Figueiredo, Tami Gold and UMass Amherst alumna Mónica Espinosa Arango (‘04 PhD) will be present for discussion.
