Stein-Bayer Honorary Seminar in Polymer Chemistry
On Friday November 9, 2006 the UMass Chemistry Department will be hosting its annual Stein-Bayer Seminar, which is generously sponsored the Bayer Corporation in honor of Prof. Richard Stein, Emeritus Professor of Chemistry and pioneer in the field of polymer chemistry. This year’s speaker is Professor Julia Kornfield from the Department of Chemical Engineering at the California Institute of Technology. The title of Professor Kornfield’s lecture is “Making them Faster and Better: Flow-Induced Crystallization of Polymers” and her lecture will be held at 11:15 a.m. in 1634 LGRT with refreshments at 10:45 a.m. The lecture is open to the public.
Professor Kornfield’s research program explores the molecular and microstructural dynamics that control polymer processing behavior and ultimate properties. Currently, her group is studying liquid crystalline polymers, tissue engineering of the eye and flow-induced crystallization in polymers.
She received a B.S. in Chemistry and M.S. in Chemical Engineering from Caltech in 1983 and 1984, and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at Stanford University in 1988. Following a NATO Post-doctoral Fellowship at the Max-Planck-Institute for Polymer Research, she joined the faculty at Caltech in 1990. She has been recognized for her contributions to understanding molecular and microscopic aspects of polymer viscoelasticity by awards that include the Dillon Medal of the American Physical Society, the Unilever Award of the American Chemical Society, the NSF Presidential Young Investigator Award and numerous named lectureships. The Stein-Bayer lectureship is the latest in her many awards.
