Plan B/Emergency Contraception Panel

Everywoman's Center is presenting a panel discussion, "Plan B/Emergency Contraception: What Is It? How Does It Work? Where Can I Get It? What's the Big Deal?"

On Aug. 24, the Food and Drug Administration approved the emergency contraception pill Plan B for sale without a prescription to women and men 18 years and older. Leading medical and public health organizations in the United States supported the move and emergency contraception, (EC), in existence for more then 30 years, is already available without a prescription in many other countries.

According to Planned Parenthood, it is considered to be a safe and effective means of preventing pregnancy that should be in the medicine cabinet of all women.

The panelists, Marlene Gerber Fried, director of the Civil Liberties and Public Policy Program at Hampshire College; Amanda Collings Vann, University Health Services health educator and director of the Women's Health Project; and Lucy Hartry, director of administrative services, Tapestry Health, will explain EC, how it works, where it can be obtained and why it has it taken so long to become widely available.

The program is sponsored by Tapestry Health, Women's Health Project of UHS and the Civil Liberties and Public Policy Program at Hampshire College. For more information, call Everywoman's Center at 413-545-0883
