Theater: The Caucasian Chalk Circle
Bertolt Brecht, legendary figure of twentieth-century theater, wrote resonant plays that tackled the political issues of his day — and did so in a way that transcends his own time.
Chalk Circle is a play-with-a-play that explores a dilemma worthy of Solomon: After a wealthy woman abandons her child in the midst of the revolution that killed her husband, the child is adopted by a poor woman who makes considerable sacrifices to raise him safely and lovingly. When the biological mother returns and demands her child back, the action moves into the courtroom as both women vie for custody of one of war's smallest victims.
