Faculty Senate Meeting

• Address by Representative Stephen Kulik (D-Worthington)

STATE REP. KULIK TO DISCUSS

STATE OF PUBLIC HIGHER EDUCATION FUNDING AT UMASS

State Representative Stephen Kulik (D-Worthington) will discuss the current and future condition of state funding for the University of Massachusetts at its Faculty Senate meeting May 18. It will be the Senate’s final meeting this academic year.

Kulik said he will cover how the state budget will affect public higher education in general and the University in particular.

“I’m going to talk about the Higher Education Task Force bill that recently passed in the [state] Senate and its prospects in the House [of Representatives],” Kulik said. “We did increase spending on public higher education, and I’ll talk about some of the other initiatives that are on the way.”

Kulik, who addresses the Faculty Senate annually, also will be available to answer questions after his address. He said perennial concerns center on the politics of higher education in Massachusetts, the status of contract funding, and the access to and affordability of higher education.

In other business, the senate is expected to approve a bachelor’s degree in Public Health Science, a master’s degree concentration for Women’s Health Nurse Practitioners, the creation of a Testing Center on campus, an Institutional Repository for Digital Materials, a Policy Statement on Joint Authorship, Data Ownership, Retention, and Access, the One-For-One Replacement of Parking Spaces and the Revision of the Policy on Priority for Evening Exams.
