Exhibit: Russian Children's Book Collection
This exhibit of Russian children's books is from the collection of Halina and Robert Rothstein. Robert A. Rothstein is professor of Comparative Literature and of Slavic and Judaic Studies at UMass Amherst.
Among the books displayed are works originally written in Russian as well as translations (or “retellings”) of works from other languages of the former Soviet Union and from French, German, Italian and English (e.g., Winnie-the-Pooh and Alice in Wonderland). Russian authors represented include nineteenth-century classics such as Alexander Pushkin and both well-known Soviet writers such as Vladimir Mayakovsky, Samuil Marshak and Kornei Chukovskii and their lesser-known compatriots. The books are illustrated in a wide range of styles.
Robert and Halina Rothstein have been collecting and reading Russian children’s books since the 1960s. This exhibit consists of a small portion of their collection.
Professor Rothstein will give an informal talk about the collection on Thursday, April 27, 2006 from 4:00 pm to 5:00 pm in the exhibit area on the Lower Level. It is free and open to the public; refreshments will be served.
