Film and Lecture - EDSA 2: People Power in the Philippines
The Mount Toby Friends Meeting and the American Friends Service Committee, along with the Social Justice Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Amherst, and with the cooperation of the Amherst College Community Outreach
Office presents the last film of its seven-week film series on the history of nonviolence. The film is "EDSA 2: People Power in 2001," EDSA 1 in 1986 had unseated dictator Marcos, and in 2001 the popular Philippine movement EDSA 2 took on corrupt President Estrada and in a 4-day bloodless uprising catapulted Mrs. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to the presidency.
Prof. Richard Chu, from the History Department at UMass Amherst will present a short introduction to the film and will be around to translate and explain some of the scenes, since the film has a narration in both Tagalog and English. Professor Chu, originally from the Philippines, will also stay for a discussion after the film concludes.
