University of Massachusetts Amherst

Perspectives in Children's Literature Conference

The Perspectives in Children’s Literature conference will consist of several workshops where various well-known authors will be discussing a range of approaches to children’s literature. The morning keynote speaker, Barry Moser, will present “Retaining the Power of Image: Thoughts on Illustrating Books,” and will discuss his life and work. The morning workshops will cover the ever-fluctuating art form of picture books, tips on how to get started writing your own non-fiction children’s book, fairytales, how to edit children’s books, by very qualified presenters. Finally Joseph Bruchac will hold an informal question and answer session.

While refreshments are available throughout the day, a buffet lunch with vegetarian options will be served.

The afternoon workshops held by many different presenters include a discussion of creating oral folktales and then recreating them as picture books, self-publishing your own books and learning how to market and sell those books, how to use children's books to influence children's aspirations. Afternoon keynote speaker, Joseph Bruchac, will explore the story of the American Indian without creating a reverse stereotype. To top the day off, Barry Moser will then lead a question and answer session.
