Talk and Discussion: Imperialism, Central Africa, and the World Today

Equatorial Guinea - a former Spanish colony - was a staging post for the slave trade. Recently discovered oil deposits make Equatorial Guinea the country with the third largest oil reserves in Africa and part of an oil-rich region where Washington is today increasing its military build-up.

Participants in the first Equatorial Guinea book fair discussed the challenges of economic and cultural development facing the people of Equatorial Guinea and the broader region.

Arrin Hawkins, 30, is a leader of the Young Socialists and a full time editorial volunteer for the socialist newsweekly The Militant. Hawkins recently worked in the garment and meatpacking industries, and was the Socialist Workers Party candidate for vice-president in the 2004 elections. A long time defender of fighter for Black rights and women's rights, she has recently returned from Equatorial Guinea in Central Africa.
