Faculty Service-Learning Grant Information Session

The Office of Community Service Learning will host an information session for faculty members, academic departments or units interested in applying for a service-learning fellowship.

The Provost's Committee on Service Learning is soliciting proposals for 2006-07 for teaching and research grants involving Community Service Learning (CSL). Information sessions will be held in Goodell Hall, Room 612 on February 13, February 15 and February 16, 2006.

CSL integrates community service into courses to enhance learning while responding to community needs and goals.

In order to promote community service learning as a core component of curricula in colleges, departments, centers and interdisciplinary programs, the Provost's Committee on Service Learning will award the following:

Up to $10,000 each for up to two unit implementation grants to the colleges, departments, centers, or interdisciplinary programs that submit the strongest proposals. In most cases, successful applicants will have successfully completed a planning grant. Please note that successful completion of a planning grant, however, does not guarantee later reception of an implementation grant.

Up to $2,000 each for up to five unit planning grants to the colleges, departments, centers or interdisciplinary programs that submit the strongest proposals.

$2,000 each for up to five faculty teaching awards for faculty who are developing new CSL courses or revising current courses to include significant community service. The primary purpose of the fellowship is to foster the integration into the curriculum of direct student involvement in service to the community, and the use of students' service experience to enhance their learning. Faculty from all departments are encouraged to apply, whether or not their department applies for a unit grant. Faculty sharing the teaching of a course may apply jointly to share a teaching award.

Up to $1,000 each for up to three faculty research awards for individual faculty or teams of faculty who have taught courses with CSL components and are proposing to do research leading to publication on the CSL work in which they are involved, or to present the results of their CSL research at a national conference. Previous recipients of faculty teaching awards are encouraged to apply, but this award is open to all CSL instructors. Supporting research on CSL at UMass is an important new goal of the Provost's Committee.

Up to six stipends for undergraduate course assistants (one per course) who will be available to provide former faculty fellows teaching a CSL course with ongoing logistical and classroom support throughout the semester. In addition to a $500 stipend, students will receive three credits and will participate in training designed to prepare them for this role and provide ongoing support.
