The Harlem Renaissance Ball

Celebrate Black History Month 2006

Travel back in time and enjoy the rich history of African American dance and music of the Harlem Renaissance period with the sounds of Professor Holmes and his twelve-piece band. Celebrate the transformation of African American identity during the “Harlem Renaissance” Ball.

The “Harlem Renaissance,” considered to be a high point in African American literature and fine art, music and academic discourse, paved the way for recognition of black artists and the black intelligentsia during the 1920s through the 1940s. During this period, racial consciousness and pride flourished with the written, musical, and artistic expression of African Americans commenting on their own unique experience.

Major writers and artists including Aaron Douglas, Augusta Savage, Zora Neale Hurston, Langston Hughes, Josephine Baker, Paul Robeson, Billie Holiday, and Duke Ellington, became eminent during this expressive period.

Awards will given to the best theme dressed. Hor'dourves and refreshments will be served.
