Statement by Wendy S. Evans, BA '79, Curator:

The artists represented in this exhibition are accomplished painters whose understanding of modern art has led them to very different interpretations of what it means to be an abstract painter. All three approach depth and distance not as problems, but as a way to slow the viewer?s experience, to create a narrative, to instill conflict or even confusion. These are three artists whose lives, not just their professions, have been informed by contemporary art. While I have met or worked with all three of them, and I have spent my career buying, selling, and handling art, these are artists whose daily thought process never strays far from the manufacture of painting and sculpture. I think the maturity, sophistication and honesty represented here reflects a way of thinking about art that lends a commonality to the work. While a viewer may not find this exhibition especially beautiful, (or even harmonious), still one ought to come away satisfied that abstraction today still warrants exploration and expression, and that the artists represented are more than capable of furthering the case for formal abstraction.
