A Conversation with Ahmed Kathrada
Ahmed Kathrada, a former political prisoner in South Africa, will speak about his experiences on Robben Island and his work to bring equality to South Africa.
A political activist from the age of eleven, Mr. Kathrada was sentenced in 1963 to life in prison and subsequently served time with Nelson Mandela, Walter Sisulu and Govan Mbecki. Since the overthrow of apartheid, he has concentrated not on personal retribution but on continuing his fight for cultural equality and acceptance in his roles as a member of Parliament, Mr. Mandela's chief consultant, author, and tireless public speaker.
A reception and book signing follow the talk. Copies of Mr. Kathrada’s two books, "Letters from Robben Island: A selection of Ahmed Kathrada’s Prison Correspondence, 1964-1989" and his newly released "Memoirs," will be available for purchase.
