Physics Colloquium: Science and Technology for Homeland Security

Cherry Murray, deputy director for science and technology at the Lawrence Livermore National Lab, will speak on “Science and Technology for Homeland Security” at a Physics colloquium.

The focus of the colloquium will be a discussion of some of the current challenges the lab faces as it protects the country and how today's technologies are being used to respond to those challenges. Two significant areas of concern, bio-security and nuclear security, will be used to illustrate where advances in science and technology are underway and where further innovation is urgently needed. Specific examples, such as knowledge management and the detection of explosives will illustrate the presentation. With security a major national focus, opportunities for students are present and some of these will be discussed.

Refreshments will be available at 3:40 p.m.
