Talk by Lisa Hajjar: The Causes and Costs of America's Torture Scandal

The Law & Society Initiative at UMass Amherst welcomes you to its first speaker this year, Professor Lisa Hajjar, who will be talking on "The Causes and Costs of America's Torture Scandal: A Critical Assessment of The Role of Lawyers."

Lisa Hajjar is a sociologist and professor in the Law and Society Program at the University of California, Santa Barbara. She is a leading international expert on the contemporary Middle East and issues relating to human rights and humanitarian law (i.e., laws of war, and particularly the Geneva Conventions).

She also has strong expertise on Israel/Palestine, namely on Israel's occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, and the politics of law in that region. Her recent book, "Courting Conflict: The Israeli Military Court System in the West Bank and Gaza" has received much attention for its contribution to understanding the forces of occupation and limits of justice in situations of acute conflict.

The talk is open to the public.
