In an unnamed, repressive society, chewing gum is rumored to contain aphrodisiac qualities — but for two sisters who live in this claustrophobic world, the juicy treat is a symbol of defiance and freedom. Sexual politics are the order of the day among the sisters and their aunt as they negotiate the narrow confines of what's acceptable and what's not for young women in their society, all the while dealing with the elder sister's upcoming arranged marriage. Gum is a powerful examination of desire, repression, and women's search for freedom.
