Amnesty International: Darfur Letter-Writing Campaign
Amnesty International would like to call upon the students of UMass, Amherst to help stop the genocide in Darfur, Sudan through joining in a one-day letter-writing campaign.
Imagine:
-Over 300,000 deaths in less than three year's time; most from disease and starvation.
-More than 1.8 billion people displaced from their homes.
-Survivors face rape, torture, and severe shortages of clean water and food.
And the conflict continues on...
Background:
Civil war between those of Arab and non-Arab affiliation within the Sudan has been an ongoing occurence for nearly two decades. Since 2003, the Sudanese government has attempted to ethnically cleanse its population by pushing out and murdering all non-muslims, resulting in innumerable atrocities.
Amnesty International views this genocide as a pivotal crucible to the integrity of international cooperation for human rights and peace in the 21 century.
We recognize that the United States government has fallen vastly short of its capacity to respond to the crisis; and as a key member of the UN Security Council, is inhibiting the necessary international intervention. In addition, its increasingly lenient stance on the issue is believed to originate from dubious interests such as the Sudanese government's compliance in the "War on Terror" and isolationism amongst Americans.
Therefore, we ask you to join us in a letter-writing campaign. Letters will be written to our elected government officials in the endeavor to express our concern for the Darfur genocide, and contention that the U.S. government implement a more aggressive reactionary policy.
No experience in lobbying or Amnesty is necessary; all will be briefly trained how to write their letter.
We hope that anyone and everyone join us!
