Seventh Annual Library Donor Appreciation Reception
The Seventh Annual Friends of the UMass Amherst Libraries Donor Appreciation Reception recognizes Library donors and is open to the public. The program begins at 2:45 p.m.
Professor Joseph W. Donohue, Jr. of the English Department is being honored with the 2005 Siegfried Feller Award for Outstanding Volunteer Service. This award, established in 1998, is given annually to an individual who has made outstanding volunteer contributions to create awareness and build support for the UMass Amherst Libraries. Professor Donohue (B.A. Johns Hopkins University, M.A. Georgetown University, PhD, and Princeton University) recently retired after having taught at UMass Amherst since 1971. He has been a long-time advocate and staunch supporter of the Library in the community as well as through his service on the Faculty Senate since 1996 and the Research Library Council since 2000. He has also been a major donor of books, journals, and reference materials, particularly in the field of theater. After serving as editor of the Readex Nineteenth-Century British and American Plays project, he very generously donated his own set of that collection, consisting of over 23,000 titles, to the Libraries.
The keynote speaker will be Barry Moser, an extraordinary bookman, and one of today’s great book designers and illustrators. He is also a wood engraver, a painter, a publisher, an author, and a frequent lecturer on the art of the book. His magnum opus, the Pennyroyal Caxton Edition of the Holy Bible was published in 1999. Born in Tennessee and trained as a Methodist preacher, he was educated at Auburn University, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and did graduate work at the UMass Amherst. His works are represented in many prestigious collections including the Metropolitan Museum, the British Museum, and the Library of Congress. Barry Moser has won numerous awards for his work, including the National Book Award for Design and Illustration.
A book signing will follow the talk and the Jeffery Amherst Bookshop will donate a portion of proceeds of book sales to the UMass Amherst Libraries. UMass Catering will provide refreshments.
