New WORLD Theatre The Triangle Project: Journey of the Dandelion

The Triangle Project: Journey of the Dandelion is an international collaboration that weaves together the music and lives of three extraordinary women artists of Japanese origin; Yoko Fujimoto of KODO, PJ Hirabayashi of San Jose Taiko, and Nobuko Miyamoto of Great Leap. These artists witness the beginnings of the nuclear age, following the reverberations of war in this 60th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, creating more Hibakusha (A-bomb survivors) across the globe. This meditation on peace is narrated through a blend of personal stories, traditional Japanese folk and contemporary original music, the rhythms of taiko and dance invoking the spirit of Ame no Uzume to bring light and harmony to our fractured world. Ame no Uzume, the Japanese shaman of song and dance, created a magical commotion to beckon Amaterasu, the Sun Goddess, out of her cave to return light into the world. .

Journey of the Dandelion takes us beyond performance, invoking ritual to engage the audience. Using the vibration of voices and drums, the performers shift the winds of fear and violence through the transformative energy of music, revealing our collective power and connection with all humanity.

Music, book and choreography by: Yoko Fujimoto, PJ Hirabayashi and Nobuko Miyamoto; Directed by Kevin Higa.

Developed with support from New WORLD Theater, Rockefeller Map Grant, Cal State University Monterey Bay and the Japanese American Cultural and Community Center.
