Jack and Suzy Welch Book Signing
Jack Welch '57 and his wife Suzy will sign copies of their new book, Winning, in which he lays out the answers to the most difficult, important questions people face both on and off the job. Welch's objective is to speak to people at every level of the organization, in companies large and small. His audience is everyone from line workers to college students and MBAs, from project managers to senior executives. He describes his core business principles and devotes most of Winning to the real "stuff" of work. Welch's optimistic, no excuses, get-it-done mind set is riveting. His goal is to help anyone and everyone who has a passion for success.
Welch, GE’s former chief executive officer, received the university’s Engineering Award in 1974 and the President’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1981. In 1997, UMass presented Welch with the university’s highest honor, the President’s Medal. In February 2001, Welch donated $1 million to establish a scholarship fund for graduates of Salem High School. The John and Grace Welch Endowed Scholarships honor the memory of his parents. Welch frequently credits his mother with instilling in him the values and work ethic that made him one of the world’s most admired business leaders.
He is a native of Salem who graduated from Salem High School, going on to earn a bachelor of science degree from UMass in 1957. He later received a master’s degree and Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Chicago-Illinois. He began his career with GE in 1960 and advanced to lead the company as CEO and chairman for 20 years, retiring in September 2001.
All proceeds from sales of the book at this event will be donated to charity.
