Butches and Boyz on Campus: Female Masculinity and Cross-Dressing at Women's Colleges
Lecture by Kim Surkan, Five College Women's Studies Research Associate, "Butches and Boyz on Campus: Female Masculinity and Cross-Dressing at Women's Colleges" draws from archival documents at Mount Holyoke and Smith Colleges.
Surkan argues that masculine women have been visibly present in the student body of women’s colleges over the years, and play an important role in the development of campus culture. The historical recovery of such individuals is a contested part of the turf war between lesbian, feminist and transgender historians.
