Radical Jewish Project: Charming Hostess

Radical Jewish Culture Conversaton Series

at UMass Amherst

We are thrilled to present the Radical Jewish Culture Conversation Series at UMass Amherst, which seeks to explore the connections between radical and Jewish culture through artistic presentations and discussion. The series features three Jewish artists whose work ranges from themes of the genocide in the former Yugoslavia, to Israeli-Palestinian relations, to understanding the history of secular socialist Jewry in the United States. The Radical Jewish Culture Conversation Series is an opportunity to celebrate Jewish contributions to progressive social and political causes.

Charming Hostess is a three-woman whirl of eerie harmony, hot rhythm, and radical smarts. Charming Hostess lives where Jewish and African Diasporas collide, incorporating doo-wop, Pygmy counterpoint, Balkan harmony and Sufi melody. Working from text by Bosnian poet Sem Mehmedinovic, Charming Hostess sings of love, resistance, and freedom under extreme constraint.
