Film: "Onibus174/Bus 174"
12th Annual Massachusetts Multicultural Film Festival, "New Faces of Documentary"
Screening: ONIBUS 174/BUS 174 (dir. Jose Padilha, Brazil, 2003, 122 min, in Portuguese with English subtitles)
Director Padilha brilliantly dissects the 2002 hijacking of a Rio de Janeiro city bus, as Brazilian TV crews descended upon an affluent neighborhood to cover the stand-off, using extraordinary real-time footage with insights from sociologists, journalists, police officers, hostages and the young man's family and friends. A tough portrait of Brazil's street youth that transforms its investigation into a stunningly lucid, compassionate endeavor to make visible the "invisibility of the neglected."
