Research Talk on Yoga Breathing
Art of Living presents
Richard P. Brown, MD
"Yoga Breathing: Neurophysiology and Health Benefits for Stress, Anxiety, Depression, and Anger"
Dr. Richard Brown, Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University, is the author of Stop Depression Now, The Rhodiola Revolution and over 70 articles and book chapters. A winner of numerous academic and professional awards, he travels extensively around the world delivering approximately 200 lectures a year.
His current research focuses on Sudarshan Kriya (SKY) yogic breathing taught by the nonprofit Art of Living Foundation. He lectured on the benefits of SKY at the 2004 American Psychiatric Association meeting and co-authored the chapter on “Complementary and Alternative Treatments in Psychiatry,” in the textbook Psychiatry Second Edition (2003), where he describes a neurophysiological model of SKY.
Developed by Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, SKY infuses the body with energy and harmonizes the natural rhythms of the body, mind, and emotions. Yoga breathing rids the mind/body system of accumulated stress, releasing negative emotions and rejuvenating the body. Medical studies indicate that practicing SKY helps to reduce stress, depression, and anxiety.
SKY and related techniques will be taught as part of special Art of Living Workshops:
• Art of Living Course (open to everyone): March 2 – 7
• Art of Living – APEX Course (for Five College faculty & administration): April 8 – 11
