Vietnamese New Year 2005

Vietnamese New Year or "Tet Nguyen Dan" evokes a magic period of the year when everyone forgets his or her misfortune and misery from the previous year and look forward to the start of a new year. Rich or poor, young or old, everyone celebrates Tet with great solemnity and cheerfulness.

Tet Nguyen Dan is a Vietnamese festival beginning on the first day of the first lunar month. It marks the beginning of the lunar new year and the arrival of spring. Tet is the most popular festival in Vietnam and artifacts suggest that it has been celebrated since at least 500 B. C.

This New Lunar Year marks the 20th anniversary of the formal establishment of the Vietnamese Students Association at UMass-Amherst. Please come and celebrate with us on this special occasion.

Our event will consist of Vietnamese Lion Dance, bowing to the ancestors, traditional and modern dances, magic show, singing, fashion show, and speeches from special guests. There will be an after party. We will have free Vietnamese confectionary food (sweet preserve fruits or "mut"). Bring friends and come early!
