Guidelines for Off-Campus Employers

The Part-Time Job Program of the Student Employment Office is funded in part by the Job Locater Development (JLD) Program. This program is part of a larger federal grant received by UMass Amherst. It is intended to provide financial assistance to students through employment opportunities during and between periods of attendance. Jobs located or developed under the program must be suitable to the scheduling and other needs of employed students and must, to the maximum extent possible, complement and reinforce the educational program or vocational goals of students. We reserve the right to refuse any positions that do not fit these criteria.

As a recipient of these federal funds, each year we are required to report how many students worked in positions posted though our service and how much they earned. We do not report any specific information about the positions or the employers, but we do contact all the employers using our service throughout the year to determine if they have hired any UMass Amherst students.

The Student Employment Office has established the following criteria in reviewing positions for posting:

  • All employers must provide complete contact information, including a mailing address and phone number.
  • For each position listed, the employer must provide, at minimum the following information: job title, brief job description, number of hours, pay rate (advertised jobs must pay at least minimum wage), and email address (if applicable).
  • Employers must intend to issue to the student appropriate documentation of the student's annual wage (e.g. W-2)

Employers may register their agency online using our Agency Registration Form.

Please note: Employers must be located in Massachusetts and also be a non-profit, community service organization.

The Student Employment Office does NOT post the following types of positions:

  • Volunteer positions (these may be sent to the UMass Amherst Civic Engagement and Service Learning Office, 413-545-2015, cesl@umass.edu)
  • Full-time positions (while we will list full-time seasonal opportunities, for all other full-time positions please contact UMass Amherst Career Services , 413-545-2224)
  • Positions that consist of payment for participation as a research subject
  • Positions that require an initial investment by the student or are paid through commission only

Please direct questions to the Student Employment Office at 413-545-1530.
