Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find a job on/off-campus?

Jobs are listed at the Job Listings section of this Web site and on bulletin boards outside of 243 Whitmore.

Jobs are deleted from both places once the SEO receives notice from the employers that the position(s) have been filled, and the Web site is updated daily. The bulletin boards are updated at least once per week.

When do I get paid?

Students are paid bi-weekly.

How can I become an America Reads tutor?

The Community Service section provides information about the America Reads program. It will also direct you to the Five College America Reads Web site, which lists positions for tutoring, training session dates, as well as general information about the program.

Applying for and being hired for a tutoring position follows the same process as a student who wants to work off campus using work-study. Students who do not have work-study as part of their financial aid package may participate in America Reads as a volunteer.

How do I apply to work in a student business?

Each business hires once or twice a semester, either for the current semester or in anticipation of openings for the next semester. Applications are available at the individual businesses or from the Center for Student Business (CSB). Submit applications to the businesses you are interested in and they may call you for an interview. If you are interested, feel free to let the CSB know and they will put you on a potential employment list.

How can I get work-study?

Students are awarded work-study as part of their financial aid package. All students need to file a FAFSA form to receive financial aid. Students need to file by February 14 to meet the UMass Amherst March 1 deadline for priority consideration for financial aid, including work-study. Late filers will be considered for work-study, as long as funds are still available.

Visit the Work-Study section for complete information.

How do I find a work-study job?

The Student Employment Office does not assign jobs for students - everyone is responsible for his/her own job search. Jobs are listed at the Job Listings section of this Web site and on bulletin boards outside of 243 Whitmore.

If you are interested in working at a specific department, contact that department directly to inquire about available employment.

Can I have more than one job?

Yes, however you may not work more than eight hours in a day and we recommend not working more than twenty hours per week during the academic session.

At what jobs can I use my Federal Work-Study?

Federal Work-Study can be used for on-campus employment and at APPROVED Federal Work-Study off-campus sites.

Does my Federal Work-Study affect my UMass Amherst bill?

No. At UMass Amherst, Federal Work-Study is not applied to your bill.

Will I be taxed on my Federal Work-Study earnings?

Yes. Income earned through Federal Work-Study is taxable.

How will I get paid if I have a Federal Work-Study job?

You will get a bi-weekly paycheck for the hours you worked the previous two weeks, as long as all required paperwork has been returned and timesheets are received on time. To enroll in direct deposit, login to the HR Direct self-service area using your NetID and password: http://www.umass.edu/humres. Otherwise, paychecks will be available in your hiring department. To be certain, ask your supervisor.
