IPM Coordinator Tasks

The School IPM Coordinator:

is the person who decides what IPM practices are needed at the school site. The coordinator is designated by the school administration or by the IPM Advisory Committee and could be the school principal, the custodian, a teacher or someone under contract to the school. The School IPM Coordinator plays a major role in a school IPM program and is responsible for the day-to-day requirements of the program. The position of IPM Coordinator carries an important responsibility and the coordinator must be given the authority to make requests for facility improvements which reduce the need for pest control and to take actions when sanitation conditions post a threat to the health of children and school staff.

Roles & Duties of IPM Coordinator

The School IPM Coordinator plays a major role in a school IPM program and is responsible for the day-to-day requirements of the program. The position of IPM Coordinator carries an important responsibility and the coordinator must be given the authority to make requests for facility improvements which reduce the need for pest control and to take actions when sanitation conditions post a threat to the health of children and school staff (Texas).

The IPM coordinator designs a pest management system that takes into account potential liability, applicator and occupant safety, costs, effectiveness, time required, and customer or occupant satisfaction. The IPM coordinator draws on knowledge gained through prior training and uses information on the site, the pest and its biology, occupant health and concerns, appropriate control measures, and expected results. The IPM coordinator also performs the necessary pest management actions or directs others in the actions to be taken.3b

Because the IPM coordinator pest manager usually has the responsibility of keeping both the occupants and school administrators informed, he or she has the greatest need for available information about the site, pest, and appropriate pest management methods.

The duties of the IPM coordinator may include:

  1. Maintain a copy of the school’s IPM policy and IPM Plan

  2. Maintain a prioritized list of needs involving structural and landscape requirements

  3. Oversee in-house pest management personnel to ensure that they have proper training and certification.

  4. Work with administrators when contracting for pest control services to ensure that the bid specifications comply with the school IPM policy.

  5. Maintain records of pest problems, IPM activities and related complaints; also, Maintain files of pesticide application records, pesticide labels and Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS.)
