School IPM in other states

The EPA publication, Pest Control in the School Environment {2}, initiated the development of IPM information for schools. Currently, the most extensive information can be found on the World Wide Web, especially at sites developed at the Universities of Florida, Wisconsin, Tennessee and Cornell (URLs given in literature citation section). These sites include technical information on pests and pesticides, but also include information relating to the development of training programs, teaching curricula, writing pest management contracts, and writing school IPM policy.

Cornell and Tennessee websites provide access to extensive articles {44, 50} which outline specific information for their states as well as general information on school IPM. Massachusetts has just put fourth a guideline outlining appropriate pest management practices for most indoor / structural pest and will be an asset in the development of the school IPM program {42}.

In the Northeast, state departments of agriculture, notably in Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Connecticut have developed model IPM plans for schools. Maryland Department of Agriculture has provided an extensive collection of IPM guidelines, training manuals and fact sheets for the public (Maryland Department of Agriculture, 1999). The Massachusetts' Department of Food and Agriculture has produced the publication Integrated Pest Management Kit for Building Managers (Mitchell, No Date), which has important information for school administrators. In light of the new legislation which just passed this month, a "School IPM" position has been created. In addition to implementing these outreach training programs, this position will be assigned the task of developing the infrastructure required to maintain an extensive database on pest identification and control, together with links to existing school IPM websites, new technologies, and recommendations. This database will provide resources for an extensive program to educate school officials and commercial operators on pest complexes and the control of these pests using IPM tactics.
