The Pumpkin Post and El Recaito (spanish version) is an educational and fun newsletter developed by the UMass Extension Family Nutrition Program for parents or caregivers of preschool children. Each issue contains a special insert called The Banana Beat and Sabrosito (spanish version) designed for the children themselves. The Pumpkin Post includes recipes and regular columns on child feeding challenges, seasonal foods, menu ideas, "Ask Dr. Greenbean," and "Marvelous Morsels." The Banana Beat features a fold-open activity poster for the children, a special children's recipe, a fairy tale, and a fun physical activity.

The pair comes in a series of six issues with themes about breakfast, fitness, fruits and vegetables, healthy lunches, goal setting and holiday eating.

Travels & Tastes Through Time



Explore Massachusetts: Travels and Tastes Through Time is a newsletter for children in grades 4-6 and their families. Developed by the UMass Extension Family Nutrition Program, it features foods, nutrition, and physical activity in the context of Massachusetts history. Students will learn how children lived in different periods, how they ate, and what they did for work and play. Features include articles about children's lives in four different historical time periods, a timeline, "Ask Boston Bean," a recipe and some enrichment questions or activities to enhance student learning.

Choices: Steps Towards Health

Choices: Steps Toward Health was developed by UMass Extension Nutrition Education Program for use with EFNEP and FSNE programs, using the learning by dialogue teching method. This method is and adult learning pedagogy where learners become co-teachers and teachers become co-learners through a process of dialogue and engagement.

The program is about food and physical activity using food-tasting, fun activities and conversations to explore choices for better health. The curriculum consists of seven core lessons and features lively music and movement, personal goal-setting, food preparation and tasting, and many hands-on activities. Lessons include:

  • Moving to the Mambo - physical activity
  • Whole Grain Twist - whole grains
  • 5-A-Day Salsa - fruits and vegetables
  • Low-fat Limbo - low-fat oils and foods
  • Kitchen Calypso - shopping and meal planning
  • Food Safety Four Step - food safety
  • Foods A Go-Go - fast foods

The lessons are accompanied by a welcome booklet, recipe book, physical activities, and fast food guide, all packaged in a box for easy access and storage. The curriculum is also available in Spanish. Purchase Now
