Information
As part of the Department of Nutrition within the University of Massachusetts Amherst School of the Public Health and Health Sciences, NEP extends university research and teaching to Massachusetts communities. Across Massachusetts, NEP offices serve as focal points for the design, delivery and evaluation of nutrition programs. They provide local leadership in areas of needs assessment, community partnerships, and staff training and development.

The Fall River Area office offers a variety of adult and youth programs for the greater New Bedford, Fall River and Taunton areas. Professional staff and trained nutrition educators collaborate with community agencies, public schools and after-school and vacation programs to provide nutrition education opportunities for adults and youth, families and agency staff. Activities include series and single-session workshops, interactive displays, food demonstrations, newsletters and other print materials. Nutrition education is provided through the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) and the Family Nutrition Program (FNP).

Programs

EFNEP, a USDA funded program for limited-resource families and youth, helps participants build healthful eating habits. The program is delivered by nutrition educators and includes a series of 8 workshops for adults or 4 workshops for youth.

FNP, a federally funded initiative, provides information about healthful eating to individuals and families who are eligible for food stamps. In-school youth participate in a series of 8 workshops, adults in single sessions or series of workshops, and youth in vacation programs.
