Information
As part of the Department of Nutrition within the University of Massachusetts Amherst School of the Public Health and Health Sciences, NEP extends university research and teaching to Massachusetts communities. Across Massachusetts, NEP offices serve as focal points for the design, delivery and evaluation of nutrition programs. They provide local leadership in areas of needs assessment, community partnerships, and staff training and development.

The State NEP office at UMass Amherst provides leadership for the Nutrition Education Program. We assess statewide needs, foster development of education programs, obtain funding for NEP programs, conduct evaluation, report results, and facilitate linkages between faculty, field offices, staff, state agencies, and federal programs.

Programs
The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) helps low income families, especially families with young children, to make the most of food dollars, to prepare food safely, and to build healthful eating and physical activity habits.

The Family Nutrition Program (FNP) works with schools and community organizations to reach adults and youth who are eligible for food stamps with nutrition education and promotion of physical activity.

The Food Safety Education Program provides leadership in the effort to improve safe food-handling practices, and to spread the word about causes and methods of preventing food-borne illnesses.

The Nutrition and Health Program works with older adults, childcare providers, teachers, parents, and teens on issues relating to dietary recommendations by offering home study opportunities, on-line courses, video conferences, and newsletters.
