Recalls J.V. Trading Glendale
Ltd. Issues Allergy Alert on Undeclared Sulfites in Lukai Sweetened
Jujube (SafetyAlerts) - J.V. Trading Glendale Ltd., 385 W. John
St., Hicksville, NY 11801 is recalling packages of LUKAI brand SWEETENED
JUJUBE because the product contains undeclared sulfites. People
who have a severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious
or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.
SWEETENED JUJUBE was distributed
nationwide through retail stores and wholesale distributors. SWEETENED
JUJUBE is packaged in 235gr. (8.3 oz) sealed plastic bags with red,
tan, and yellow labeling, mostly all Chinese writing with a brief
product introduction in English on the back of the package. The
product code is Q/ CLB03-2001 and can be found on back of package.
No illnesses have been reported
to date in connection with this problem.
The recall was initiated after
routing sampling by Food Inspectors of the New York State Dept.
of Agriculture and Markets revealed that the product containing
sulfite was distributed in packaging that did not declare the presence
of sulfites. The consumption of 10 mg. of sulfites per serving has
been reported to elicit severe reactions in some asthmatics. Anaphylactic
shock could occur in certain sulfite sensitive individuals upon
ingesting 10 mg. or more of sulfites. Analysis of the LUKAI SWEETENED
JUJUBE revealed it contained in excess of 82 mg. per serving.
Consumers who have purchased
LUKAI SWEETENED JUJUBE in 235 gr (8.3 oz) plastic packages can return
it to J.V. Trading Glendale Ltd. at the above address for a full

21, 2003 State Agriculture Commissioner Issues Warning on Potato
Salad (SafetyAlerts) - The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned
consumers not to eat "Potato Salad" sold at Mazur Meat
Market, 922 Manhattan Avenue, Brooklyn, New York 11222 due to Listeria
contamination.
The "Potato Salad"
was sold from a refrigerated display in one pound plastic tubs and
is uncoded. The salad was made at the store and was offered for
sale July 10, 2003.
The problem was discovered
as a result of routine sampling by New York State Department of
Agriculture and Markets food inspectors. Production of the salad
has been suspended while the company investigates the problem.
Listeria is a common organism
found in nature. It can cause serious complications for pregnant
women, such as stillbirth. Other problems can manifest in people
with compromised immune systems. Listeria an also cause serious
flu-like symptoms in healthy individuals.
No illnesses have been reported
to date.
Consumers who have purchased
this product should return it to the place of purchase or discard
it.
